Getting around in China

Getting around planning begins with your own route and the details that matter to your visit. Use this checklist to organise the questions to confirm, compare the options in our collection and continue with official information. Use current official information for booking details; no personal testing or confirmed availability is claimed.

Sketch the journey, then confirm the service

The city pairs below are drawn from our editorial itineraries. They show route order, not a verified direct train service. Use them as a checklist when looking up actual connections. Confirm the departure and arrival station names, travel date and booking details with the operator. Duration, fare and current service availability remain unverified here; no suggested route is a connection guarantee.

Keep arrival days flexible

Write down your arrival point and accommodation address before comparing onward transport. For an airport transfer, check the terminal, meeting point, contact method, luggage allowance and what happens if the flight changes. Keep the confirmation available to show the operator. Do not squeeze a fixed-entry attraction into an arrival block until you have confirmed the journey and allowed space for uncertainty.

Compare a driver or a booked transfer

If a private driver or transfer suits your route, ask what is included, where the service begins and ends, and which stops are agreed. Check the operator’s cancellation and delay arrangements directly. This guide covers passenger transport, rail planning and booked transfers. It does not recommend self-driving or assume that a foreign driving licence is valid for driving in China.

Use official information first

Start by checking the operator and your reservation details. Optional Trip.com and Klook links are comparison routes, not confirmation that a specific connection is sold or available. An itinerary may need a different order after you check real services. Revisit your accommodation choice and keep copies of the station names, property address and booking reference together before leaving for the journey. Keep the final station names and operator contact alongside your property confirmation, so the whole arrival plan is easy to retrieve.
